ProCite: Importing Reference Database Citations
The OSU Library
catalog, OhioLINK catalog and many reference databases allow you to output
citations in a format that can be imported into bibliographic management
software. This document provides information for doing this with ProCite
v5 or higher. Basic familiarity with ProCite is assumed.
Saving citations and importing them into
ProCite may work better with some databases than others due to differences in
data structure. Test a few citations
and compare the ProCite entry with the original database citation to
confirm that all the desired data is output from the database
and imported correctly.
The information provided in the table below includes:
-
list of all databases/vendors which have been tested with ProCite;
-
steps to save citations from each database; always save as text (.txt) file;
-
ProCite filter to use for each database; also see the next paragraph;
-
database vendor.
Selecting the Correct ProCite Configuration File
A basic set
of configuration files for importing records into ProCite comes with the
software. Additional configuration files can be downloaded from the ProCite
or the database vendor's Web site. Other filter options include
-
using a filter for a different database from the same vendor
-
editing an existing filter to meet your needs
-
manually entering citations
If
you do any of the above test the filter with several records to confirm that all
the data you want is being output from the reference database and imported
correctly.
