General Guidelines concerning use of Computers in the Libraries.

Contact your IT Liaison or, if your Liaison is unavailable, the IT/CSS department through either the service request form http://library.osu.edu/sites/staff/forms/servicerequest.php or at 8-4310 for assistance on any IT related issue or the following.

Prior to the first day of a new employee,  Supervisors should fill out a Novell Accounts for New Employees form. This will assure accounts are created and ready for new employees.  This form should also be used to inform IT/CSS of a departing employee so that the account can be disabled and server space recovered.

All Users will be assigned a password, when their Novell account is created, for security purposes.  Go to Tips for a secure password for more information on passwords.

Users are supplied with space on networked servers.  All work should be saved either to the Users home space or shared group space for safety and security purposes.  If you are running out of server space contact IT/CSS through the service request form and the best solution for each situation will be mutually determined.

Due to software license tracking and liability, loading of software not obtained through or in association with the IT/CSS department is prohibited.  Additional software needed has to be approved and requested by your supervisor using the service request form indicating the software needed.  IT/CSS will obtain, maintain the license tracking and install the software for you.

Personal (including departmental purchased) hardware, such as laptops, handheld devices (palm pilots, ipods), wireless devices or any other equipment that would attach to the network or OSUL hardware is handled on a case by case basis.  IT/CSS can/will purchase and install any (approved) hardware using departmental resources if necessary.  Please use the service request form indicating the need.  IT/CSS will assist in the connection and security, when applicable, of the hardware request.

The PC's are configured by IT/CSS based on many factors, including licensing and security, and should not have any of the configurations changed without first consulting IT/CSS.
