Issey Miyake was born on April 22,
1939 in Hiroshima, Japan. Miyake, after graduating from the
Tama Art University with a degree in graphic design, moved to Paris,
France. In
Paris he worked under fifties' fashion designers Guy Laroche and
Givenchy. By 1970, Miyake opened his own house of couture
fashion. Soon his designs were featured on the fashion runways of
Tokyo, New York, and Paris. Issey Miyake is also a leading innovator in
textile science and technology. He created the revolutionary
cloth and clothing lines "Pleats Please," a light, flexible and
permanently pleated fabric, and A-POC (A Piece of Cloth), clothing
created from a single piece of cloth. In addition, his line of
fragrances revamped the cosmetics industry by offering fresh, minimal
scents. Issey Miyake uses Apple Macintosh computers for business
and design applications. Miyake was featured in Apple's 1999
"Think Different" poster campaign. In 2004, The Ohio State
University Wexner Center for the Arts selected Miyake to receive the
11th Annual Wexner Prize for promoting clothing as a wearable art and
creating innovative fabrics for clothing design.
