Le phénomène, encore très minoritaire, a acquis une forte visibilité en France à travers une série de faits qui ont défrayé l'actualité (expulsion d'imams, annulation de mariage pour cause de non-virginité, affaires des caricatures du Prophète, voile à l'école, etc. ). De même, les figures emblématiques du terrorisme international (Ben Laden, Zawahiri) se réclament du salafisme pour justifier leur lutte contre l'Occident. Cet ouvrage se propose d'expliquer ce qu'est le salafisme, en restituant les dimensions théologiques, sociales et politiques d'un phénomène complexe, qui peut s'exprimer de façon pacifique ou violente, mais qui pose partout la question du rapport à la société et à ses institutions. Il cherche à montrer comment des influences religieuses qui ont leur origine dans la péninsule arabique parviennent à modifier les comportements de certains musulmans. et pourquoi une telle pratique de l'islam est appelée à prendre une importance croissante dans les années à venir. Premier livre de synthèse sur la question, Qu'est-ce que le salafisme? repose sur l'exploitation des travaux de chercheurs français et étrangers, qui se sont efforcés, dans les contextes les plus variés, d'interpréter le sens de cette appartenance grâce à un travail de terrain auprès des militants pour comprendre leurs représentations et leurs pratiques religieuses.
