of the Somme, but rather in the fifteen years preceding World War I. In this
short span of time, a new world order was emerging in ultimately tragic
contradiction to the old. The major topics of the day: terrorism, globalization,
immigration, consumerism, the collapse of moral values, and the rivalry of
superpowers. These were the years in which the political and personal
repercussions of the Industrial Revolution were felt worldwide: cities grew as
never before, as people fled the countryside and their traditional identities
science created new possibilities as well as nightmares education changed the
outlook of millions mass-produced items transformed daily life industrial
laborers demanded a share of political power and women sought to change their
place in society. Historian Philipp Blom chronicles this extraordinary epoch

On August 7, 1914, Britain fired its first shots of World War I not in Europe but in the German colony of Togo. The campaign to eliminate the threat at sea posed by German naval bases in Africa would soon be won, but in the land war, especially in East Africa, British troops would meet far fiercer resistance from German colonial forces that had fully mastered the tactics of bush warfare. It was expected to be a small war, over by Christmas, yet it would continue bloodily for more than four years, even beyond the signing of the Armistice in Europe.--From publisher description

Table of Contents: Great Britain in the 1970s appeared to be in terminal decline--ungovernable, an economic wreck, and rapidly headed for global irrelevance. Three decades later, it is the richest and most influential country in Europe, and Margaret Thatcher is the reason. The preternaturally determined Thatcher rose from nothing, seized control of Britain's Conservative party, and took a sledgehammer to the nation's postwar socialist consensus. She proved that socialism could be reversed, inspiring a global free-market revolution. Simultaneously exploiting every politically useful aspect of her femininity and defying every conventional expectation of women in power, Thatcher crushed her enemies with a calculated ruthlessness that stunned the British public and without doubt caused immense collateral damage. Ultimately, however, author Berlinski agrees with Thatcher: There was no alternative. Berlinski explains what Thatcher did, why it matters, and how she got away with it in this vivid portrait of one of the towering figures of the twentieth century.--From publisher description

Table of Contents: In the sobering aftermath of America's invasion of Iraq, documentarian Jarecki launches a penetrating inquiry into how forces within the American political, economic, and military systems have come to undermine the carefully crafted structure of our republic--upsetting its balance of powers, vastly strengthening the hand of the president in taking the nation to war, and imperiling the workings of American democracy. Surveying a scorched landscape of America's military adventures and misadventures, Jarecki's account includes interviews with leading figures in the Bush administration, Congress, the military, academia, and the defense industry. Their insights expose the deepest roots of American war making. As Jarecki powerfully argues, only concerted action by the American people can, and must, compel the nation back on course.--From publisher description; Introduction: Mission creep -- The tip of the spear -- The arsenal of democracy -- Fear in the night -- Big white men -- John Boyd, Donald Rumsfeld, and the meaning of transformation -- The missing C : an insider's guide to the complex -- Shock and awe at home -- Conclusion: If I ran the zoo

Table of Contents: A narrative history of the largely unexplored events-starting almost a century before-that inspired the colonists to launch the American Revolution. Repressive actions by the Crown against its colonies in the years following the French and Indian War may have been the direct causes, but historian Carr takes a longer view, and argues that the cumulative effect of more than one hundred years of British disrespect, mismanagement, and exploitation prepared the minds of the colonists for revolution. --From publisher description

Table of Contents: Brooklyn -- Destined to the cord -- The stool of repentance -- A cry of barbarity & cruelty -- Sweet liberty -- War ad terrorem -- The war of words -- Dead reckonings -- Forgotten patriots; Between 1775 and 1783, some 200,000 Americans took up arms against the British Crown, and just over 6,800 died in battle. About 25,000 became prisoners of war, most of them confined in New York City under conditions so atrocious that they perished by the thousands. Evidence suggests that at least 17,500 Americans may have died in these prisons--more than twice the number to die on the battlefield. New York City was the principal base of the Crown's military operations. Beginning with the American captives taken during the 1776 invasion of New York, captured Americans were stuffed into a hastily assembled collection of public buildings, sugar houses, and prison ships. The prisoners were shockingly overcrowded and chronically underfed--those who escaped alive told of comrades so hungry they ate their own clothes and shoes. This book is the first-ever account of these hell-holes, a sobering commentary on how much we have forgotten about our struggle for independence

Table of Contents: With eloquence equal to Jefferson and Tom Paine, Adams helped ignite the flame of liberty and made sure it glowed even during the Revolution's darkest hours. He was, as Jefferson later observed, truly the man of the Revolution. Adams played a pivotal role not fully appreciated until now in the events leading up to the confrontation with the British. Believing that God willed a free American nation, he was among the first to call for independence. He saw the opportunity to stir things up after the Boston Massacre and helped plan and instigate the Boston Tea Party. A fiery newspaper editor, he railed ceaselessly against taxation without representation and argued the urgency of revolution. When the top British general in America offered a general amnesty in 1775 to all who would lay down their arms, he excepted only John Hancock and Samuel Adams: these two were destined for the gallows.--From publisher description

Table of Contents: The late William F. Buckley Jr. offers a reminiscence of thirty years of friendship with the man who brought the American conservative movement out of the political wilderness and into the White House. Ronald Reagan and Buckley were political allies and close friends throughout Reagan's political career. They went on vacations together and shared inside jokes. Yet for all the words that have been written about him, Ronald Reagan remains an enigma. His former speechwriter Peggy Noonan called him paradox all the way down, and even his son Ron Reagan despaired of ever truly knowing him. But Reagan was not an enigma to William F. Buckley Jr. They understood and taught each other for decades, and together they changed history. This book presents an American political giant as seen by another giant, who knew him perhaps better than anyone else--the most revealing portrait of Ronald Reagan the world is likely to have.--From publisher description; First meeting -- Visiting the Reagans in California -- Is it possible to be a good governor? -- Capote and the Reagans -- Is Reagan running? -- Nixon to China -- Reagan vs. Ford -- Schweiker for Veep? -- Thanksgiving at the Buckleys' -- Firing line and the Panama Canal -- Firing line: the debate -- Reagan anticipates his presidency -- National Review's 25th -- New begnnings -- Stockman and the budget -- A self-interrogation on the size of government -- National Review's 30th -- On nuclear strategy in Honolulu -- Final meeting -- Selected columns
