Fire and Mud: Eruptions and Lahars of Mount Pinatubo, Philippines

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
This site describes the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo and the extensive mudflows which followed in 1991-1992. There are articles, many of which are academic or technical, on the geologic and human aspects of the eruption. There are also many photographs and extensive seismic information, with a description of the operation of a telemetered seismic network. This site is essentially an online version of the book, published in 1996. The Geology Library has a copy of the book QE523.P56 F57 1996 (from the Librarians' Index to the Internet, ill.org)

Basic Guide to Volcanic Hazards

Prepared by Colleen M. Riley, MTU.
"Volcanoes are beneficial to humans living on or near them. They produce fertile soil, and provide valuable minerals, water reservoirs, geothermal resources, and scenic beauty. But volcanoes can be very dangerous. Where can a person go to be safe from an erupting volcano? What types of volcanic hazards might they face? These questions are difficult to answer because there are many types of volcanic eruptions which produce different types of volcanic hazards."

Exploring the Environment™ (ETE)

Modules include Mars Landing ; Strangers in Paradise; Severe Weather: Hurricanes! Weather or Not? Yellowstone Fires; Korean Enigma; Rift Valley Fever; Mountain Gorillas; Temperate Rainforest; El Niño: The Child Returns; Tropical Poison; Volcanoes; Water Quality; Florida Everglades;Global Climate Change; Earth on Fire; UV Menace.

How Volcanoes Work

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)
South Dakota State University
This website is an educational resource that describes the science behind volcanoes and volcanic processes. It is intended for the education of university students of geology and volcanology and teachers of earth science.

Lassen Volcano National Park, California

Lava Beds National Monument, California

Les Volcans du Canada/Volcanoes of Canada

"Use this site as a resource to learn more about Canadian volcanoes and volcanology. Get introductory information, learn about types of volcanoes and eruptions, their hazards, how they are monitored, what we do about them, and how to become a volcanologist." Includes a browsable directory of Canadian volcanoes, an interactive volcano map, and related Web resources. From Geological Survey Canada. Available in English and French. (from the Librarians' Index to the Internet, ill.org)

Mount St. Helens Succession Collection

This site features a collection of 235 photographs taken by Dr. Robert del Moral over a 20-year period following the eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980. "These consist of a series of 'permanent plot views', photos taken of the same site over a period of years, general aspects of impacted habitats, and photos of some of the more common species of plants." Searchable. From the University of Washington Libraries.

National Geographic: Forces of Nature

This site is a companion to a National Geographic film about four of the most destructive natural forces: hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes, and tornadoes. Features a description of the science behind the natural disasters along with an interactive activity for each. Also includes introductory facts, a list of famous forces, a glossary, and lesson plans. (from the Librarians' Index to the Internet, lii.org)

Vents Program

The Vents Program "conducts research on the impacts and consequences of submarine volcanoes and hydrothermal venting on the global ocean." Includes information about specific research sites, the New Millennium Observatory (which "studies the dynamic interactions between submarine volcanic activity and seafloor hotsprings"), ocean seismicity, bioacoustics, and related topics. Also includes teaching material and images. From the Pacific Maritime Environmental Laboratory. (from the Librarians' Index to the Internet, lii.org)

Volcano Above the Clouds

This site about Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro is a companion to a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) NOVA program. Includes information about Kilimanjaro's shrinking summit glaciers, a tour of Mt. Kilimanjaro's six ecological zones, images of the highest mountain on each of the seven continents, and information about mountain weather. Also includes recommended links and books and a teacher's guide. (from the Librarians' Index to the Internet, ill.org)

Volcano Information Center

This website is designed for educational purposes by Professor Emeritus Richard V. Fisher at UCSB, and is maintained by volunteers. The purpose of the Volcano Information Center (VIC) is to provide links to websites that are resources for data not contained in VIC and to inform the user about general volcanology in an organized way, including features of volcanoes, volcanic eruptions and volcanic hazards.
