Rudolph Preservation Endowment

Friends of the OSU Libraries' Board of Directors continues to support the Emanuel and Ann Rudolph Preservation Endowment assisting with the university's expenditures on behalf of preservation and conservation for the Libraries'collections. While the focus remains on the Thompson Library renovation, the income from the Friends Library Endowment will help offset some of the costs of preserving Ohio State's valuable collections.

The challenge of preserving aged books is currently a tremendous unmet need. According to OSU Libraries Preservation Officer, Wesley Boomgaarden, approximately 500,000 of the over five million volumes in our holdings are in an endangered condition. Many old books have been shrink-wrapped because of their brittle state. Other rare publications have been saved through deacidification. Still others receive conservation rebinding. Photocopies have been made of many heavily used, brittle, out of print books.

The endowment was established by the estate of Dr. Emanuel Rudolph,OSU Emeritus Professor of Plant Biology, and a founding member of the Friendsof the OSU Libraries. He and his wife, Ann, were avid book collectors who amassed over 53,000 volumes in their lifetime. Saving precious books for the education and enjoyment of future generations was certainly a major interest and concern for both of them.

Your support of the Rudolph Preservation Endowment is a welcomed gift. Please contact the Friends Office for more information.
