All crew members had to
sign a contract indemnifying Lake and Danenhower and the Expedition against damages. Wilkins 15-17.

“Our crew was a small one, but it had been carefully chosen from among many applicants.”  (Thomas, p.263)  Sloan Danenhower was chosen as the captain.  He was a graduate of the US Naval Academy in 1907.  Following WWI, he had resigned from the Navy Submarine Service to join Simon Lake as a designer and builder of undersea craft.  Harold Sverdrup of Norway was the chief scientist and Ray Meyers was the chief Radio operator.  In all, a total of 18 men comprised the crew.
