Guide to Information Resources in
Education:
Using the World Wide Web
In addition to delivering the content of many journal articles, ERIC documents, and even books to you in electronic format, the World Wide Web can lead you to a world of information that would otherwise be difficult to find. Be sure to evaluate the information you find on the Web just as you would any other information you use. Check for:
- Accuracy
- Timeliness
- Depth of coverage
- Credentials of the authors or issuing organization
- Bias

General Gateways
- INFOMINE (http://infomine.ucr.edu/)
- "A virtual library of Internet resources relevant to faculty, students, and research staff at the university level. It contains useful Internet resources like databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, mailing lists, online library card catalogs, articles, directories of researchers, and many other types of information." Select either "Instructional Resources: K-12" or "Social Sciences and Humanities." The "Browse by Subject" feature is helpful.
- The Internet Public Library (IPL) (http://www.clearinghouse.net/)
- Formerly known as the Argus Clearinghouse, includes sites on a number of topics including education annotated and evaluated by students at the University of Michigan School of Information.
- The Scout Report (http://scout.cs.wisc.edu/)
- One of the best evaluative gateways on the Web. Sites are annotated and evaluated, and archives are searchable by keyword.
- Yahoo! Education (http://dir.yahoo.com/education/index.html)
- The "Education" section of this popular, but non-evaluative directory includes collections of sites arranged by topic and audience. Includes links to other Internet resources, such as discussion lists.

- Lesson plans and activities; study, travel and other funding info; more teacher resources.
- Educator's Reference Desk (http://www.eduref.org)
- Formerly "AskERIC," this "virtual reference desk" includes a library of Web sites, as well as a question and answer archive,and online lesson plans.
- Librarians' Index to the Internet-Education Topics (http://lii.org/pub/topic/edlib)
- Part of one of the leading collections of annotated and evaluated. Web-based resources. Site topics are searchable by subject, including "hot topics".
- Michigan Electronic Library-Education (http://web.mel.org/viewtopic.jsp?id=10)
- Excellent collection of resources in education with a useful description of criteria for inclusion. Resources arranged by topic and by potential audience. Includes "hot topics" and list of "essential resources."
- Selected Web Sites of Importance to College/University Education Librarians (Association of College and Research Libraries) (http://www.ala.org/ala/acrlbucket/ebss2/cimc/cimc.htm)
- Web sites selected by college and university librarians with responsibility for education and curriculum materials collections.
- Statistical Resources on the Web (http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/stats.html)
- Wide variety of statistical sources compiled by the University of Michigan. Relevant sections include "Business" and "Government," as well as "Education."

- Links to resources in educational psychology. Compiled by librarians at Miami University, this list is no longer being updated.
- EdSitement (http://edsitement.neh.gov/)
- A joint project of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Council of Great City Schools and others, this site is "a constantly growing collection of the most valuable online resources for teaching English, history, art history, and foreign languages." Includes lesson plans.
- EDUCAUSE (http://www.educause.edu)
- Promotes "the intelligent use of information technology" in higher education
- Explorations in Learning and Instruction: The Theory Into Practice Database (http://tip.psychology.org)
- Summaries of 50 major theories of learning and instruction, also searchable by domain and concept. See also http://www.psychology.org "People and History" for more information.
- Higher Education Research Hub (http://www.higher-ed.org/home.htm)
- Wide variety of information regarding higher education, including links to professional organizations and research centers, reference resources, Carnegie Classification, online reports, and more.
- LD Online: Learning Disabilities Information and Resources (http://www.ldonline.org/)
- For parents, teachers, and children, this site includes an annotated list of Web-based resources, as well as other features.

- Jointly sponsored by the International Literacy Institute (ILI) and the National Center for Adult Literacy (NCAL) at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, this is a gateway to information on national and international adult literacy.

- Evaluative list of sites on all aspects of multicultural education.

- A comprehensive annotated collection of resources compiled by Sandra Steingart of the Baltimore County Public Schools.
- Science and Math Educational Web Resources (http://library.osu.edu/sites/geology/education/main.php)
- OSU math and science librarians created this annotated gateway to sites in math and all areas of science. Included are links to science fair project sites and Ohio science standards.

- Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE) (http://www.ed.gov/free/)
- Collection of educational resources that have been developed by agencies of the federal government or their partners. Organized by subject.
- FedStats (http://www.fedstats.gov/)
- Pulls together online statistics from over 100 federal agencies. Includes links to kids' pages on agency Web sites.
- Ohio Department of Education (http://www.ode.state.oh.us/)
- Information on state and local educational initiatives, including licensing requirements, district report cards, etc.
- United States Department of Education (http://www.ed.gov/index.jsp)
- Includes links to departmental offices, such as the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), as well as the full text of selected government publications, speeches by the Secretary of Education, and more.
- What Works Clearinghouse (http://w-w-c.org/)
- "Established by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences to provide educators, policymakers, and the public with a central, independent, and trusted source of scientific evidence of what works in education."
