2. Chiquita Mullens Lee the Libraries' new communication officer described her role in improving communication across the board for the Libraries, and solicited input from the Council concerning their thoughts about how to improve communication with the University community. She is planning on having a Communications Support Committee to assist with improving the image of the Libraries. It was suggested that she make contact with communication officers in the various colleges and departments.
3. Wes Boomgaarden presented an update on the Main Library Renovation Project. The architect for the Architectural Feasibility Study is on board and will produce a report before the end of the calendar year. The data gathering phase of the project will last through May; this is a time to identify what functions/collections should be in the Main Library building, without regard to the amount of space that would be required. Town Meetings are scheduled for the 5th and 6th of April; there will be open meetings as well as focus groups.
The role to be played by the Council for these meetings was discussed. Library Council could be a sponsor of the meetings, with a Council member introducing the the session. In each of the sessions an architect will provide an overview of the process and facilitate the discussion (for examples of the work the firm of Shepley,Bulfinch, Richardson, and Abbott has done, visit their Web site); either Wes Boomgaarden or Joe Branin will provide an introduction of what we're trying to accomplish. Library Council can also assist with identifying key questions that should be asked of each group.
The Library Lecture Committee is also presenting a panel discussion composed of the Directors of three libraries which have recently been built or undergone renovation. Each individual will give a brief 15-20 minute presentation dealing with their experiences and then the session will be opened for questions from the audience. This meeting will be held on April 4 2:30-4:30 in the Medical Heritage Center of the Health Sciences Library.
4. The Library Lecture Committee has proposed that there be a major program in the fall dealing with scholarly communication. The assistance of Library Council would be greatly appreciated. Copies of an article by Lindsay Waters, "A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Books of the Members of the MLA from Being a Burden to Their Authors, Publishers, or Audiences", was distributed to the members present, and can be accessed at the following Web site. Additional information is also available on the Web sites identified at the January Council meeting: www.arl.org/scomm, and www.arl.org/sparc.
5. The meeting was adjourned at 4:50 p.m.
