SUBJECT: Processing of donations and library discards
Beginning this fall, the Friends will begin shipping many of the Libraries’ discarded materials to Better World Books, www.betterworldbooks.com. The contract with BWB stipulates that they will accept our materials provided they “…have not been previously ‘picked over’ (offered for sale or as a donation to employees, the general public or any third party).” The Friends are currently exploring alternatives for properly reusing or recycling those materials that will not be taken by BWB.
The Friends will begin accepting discards immediately.
- Individual locations should determine which materials are to be discarded. Managers and specialists need only discard and withdraw; they do not need to be concerned with the format of the items. Discards/withdrawals will be sorted by the Friends.
- Collection managers who have materials that are prepared to be boxed should contact Joanna Anderson at 292-6151, anderson.506@osu.edu.
- Administrative Services will provide students to pack boxes, which will then be transported to the Thompson Library (switching to Ackerman this fall) for sorting and disposition.
- Admin Services would like to schedule those locations with the most pressing discard issues for the first pickups.
