CAC Report to the Faculty
February 8, 2001
Submitted by Carol Diedrichs, Chair

Administrative -- CAC returned to its monthly meeting schedule in September 2000. Carol Diedrichs rejoined the Council as chair with her appointment as Acting Assistant Director for Collection Management in September. CAC is also now involved in the setting of the agenda for the quarterly Collection Managers' Forums.

Activities to date -

  1. One time funds - the Council made two calls for proposals for one-time funding to collection managers in October and November 2000. Those calls were very well-received and the Council has now dispensed approximately $660,000 in funds to collection managers for spending. The range of items purchased include supplemental funding for serial backfiles, special collections materials, and microform collections. The lists of approved requests can be found on the Technical Services web page under Collection Management at cacmenu.htm

  2. Approved policy change which allows collection managers to encumber 100% of their funds rather than 95% as in the past.

  3. Cataloging web sites in OSCAR - the Council has approved a policy concerning the selection and cataloging of free Internet sites. That will shortly be distributed and posted on the web site. This policy paves the way for a test of cataloging web sites using OCLC's CORC system. The Serials/Electronic Resources Dept. has designed a process similar to the ORT process which was demoed for the Council and will be tested with a small group of collection managers beginning in the March.

Ongoing activities -

  1. Discussion of how to encourage the expenditure of funds so that the unexpended balance in the materials budget at the end of the fiscal year is reduced.

  2. Review of policies on storage and duplication.

  3. Review of current allocations - it is one of our goals to provide an opportunity to distribute new base funding for FY02 (beginning July 2001) for monographs and/or serials. The Council is working to develop a mechanism to start that request and review process.
