Background and terminology clarification:
In cataloging the words "Analysis" and analytics" in the broadest sense refer to the practice of describing something both at the comprehensive level and in terms of its component parts (see AACR2 Chapter 13). Thus, in cataloging a serial or mset which consists if separately-titled parts, "Analysis" refer to providing description and access both at the level of the serial/set title and at the level of the individual parts.
Over time at OSUL, the term "Analytic" has come to understood more narrowly, referring to local practice about particular methods of providing analysis and confused with other issues such as classification.
The following explanation is intended to clarify terminology used at OSUL.
In cataloging a serial or mset which consists of separately tilted
parts, consider these three issues
in this order.
1) Parts classed separately:
If each part needs to be classified separately according to the
topic of that part, the serial/mset
should be designated as "Cat-As-Mono" (this decision should be recorded
for future reference if it
is ongoing). Individual bib and item records are created for each
separately-titled component. Each record has a series statement (MARC
4xx,8xx) making it searchable by the title of the larger
whole. No link is made between these item records and the collective
bib on which the serial/mset
was ordered (the scattered call numbers wouldn't make an intelligible
display when viewed from
the collective bib).
2) Parts classed together (call number with designation as v.1, v.2, etc) then consider the next question.
a) Collective bibliographic record or individual bibliographic records:
Is one bibliographic record sufficient to describe the set/serial, or individual description necessary for the separate volumes to bring out separate titles, different subject, etc.
Standard treatment for cataloging serials or msets involves creating
a single bibliographic record
for the whole, with item records attached for the individual volumes.
In the case of msets with
separately-titled parts, this involves inclusion of Contents Notes
(MARC field 505) making the
individual titles keyword-searchable in OSCAR.
Making full individual bibliographic records for the
classed-together component parts is
sometimes desirable to bring out access to the individual
author/titles, especially if the parts
involve different subject. If individual records are being created then
consider the next question:
b) Linking.
Do the records for the individual volumes need to be doubled linked both to the individual records and to an additional comprehensive bibliographic record for the serial/set as a whole?
WORKS IN PARTS is the term used at OSUL for the situation of individual bibliographic records, classed together but not linked additionally back t the serial/set record on which they were ordered.
Analyzed SERIALS (this approach is not used currently for msets at OSUL) is the term used when the item record for the part is linked both to the bib for the individual title (primary link) and to the bib for the whole (secondary link). In order for display of such a double-linked item record to make sense on OSCAR, it is necessary 1) for the serial as a whole to share a call number, 2) for this call number to be present either in the item record or in both bibs, and, 3) for the volume numbering to be present in the item record volume field.
The following table compare the definition and the processing of method.

| Definition | An analyzed serial is a publication composed of multiple individual titles for which OSUL has created a single "Master Record" for holding purposes. Continuing publication is expected. | Analyzed monoset provides access to author/title/subject to individual volumes in the set. Volumes may be published over a period of time. | A monograph is a non-serial item (i.e., an item either complete in one part or complete, or intended to be completed, in a finite number of separate parts and lacking a distinctive title | An MSET (monoset) is a monographic complete or intended to be completed in a finite number of several parts. Volumes may be published over a period of time and have distinctive title. |

| Note: |
Serials cannot be analyzed unless the (or an) individual piece has a distinctive title. Staff dealing with analyzed serials should not assume that the presence of an article title record on OCLC means that it will be handled as an analytic. This decision to analyze needs to be based on the examination of the piece, not on the article level. A title for an individual article in a piece will not be analyzed. The title for an individual article cannot be used as the title for the volume. | OSUL Works-in Parts is different in that one call number is used for all the individual records but varied by including the individual number for each volume. | ||
