1900 Grandstand for athletics is authorized
1902 Trustees name new law building in honor of Henry F. Page who bequeathed to OSU his estate of more than $200,000
1904 Edward Orton Jr. donates professional library of former president Edward Orton, his father
"Carmen Ohio" was first sung in public by the University Glee Club
1905 Enrollment passes 2000 for the first time
Dedication of the Sun Dial on the Oval, a gift of the class of 1905
A.B. Graham, founder of 4-H, becomes superintendent of Agricultural Extension at OSU
1907 College of Education is created
Sphinx, the senior honorary fraternity, begins
1908 Alonzo J. Bowling became the first known African-American to receive an M.A. from OSU
Dedication of Ohio Field at North High St. and West Woodruff Ave. : the predecessor of Ohio Stadium
1909 Student Union completed, the first at a public university. It became Enarson Hall in 1986 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
Oxley Hall was dedicated as the first women's dormitory at OSU
OSU Alumni Association begins publication of what would become Ohio State University Magazine
1910 First printed reference to "Oval" as a distinctive place on campus
Student enrollment reached 3,439
1912 Graduate School begins
Dr. Caroline Breyfogle became first dean of women at OSU
1913 Main Library opens, the first building on campus to be built exclusively as a library (the previous ones being in University Hall and Orton Hall)
Engineering Experiment Station begins
1914 Starling-Ohio Medical College joins OSU as its College of Medicine
Mortarboard, women's student honorary society begins
1915 Chimes are dedicated in Orton Hall, a gift of the classes of 1906 through 1914.
1916 College of Commerce and Journalism established (predecessor of College of Business)
1917 More than 400 students officially withdraw from studies to volunteer for military service in World War I
1918 Chimes, Junior women's honorary, begins
1920 Celebration of Fiftieth Anniversary of OSU
Enrollment is at 8,313
1922 Four Quarter Plan begins
Dedication of Ohio Stadium
1923 Sullivant Medal, OSU's highest award, is presented to Benjamin Garver Lamme, distinguished engineer
1924 Alma W. Paterson became first woman trustee of OSU
1925 Trustee Julius F. Stone donates Gilbraltar Island as a home for the Center for Lake Erie Area Research
1926 George Washington Rightmire becomes sixth president of OSU
"Maudine Ormsby," a Holstein cow, elected queen of Homecoming
Dedication of Browning Amphitheatre
1927 Women's Building, completed in 1922, is re-named Pomerene Hall
First Dean of Men is appointed
Freshman Week begins as the first formal orientation of new students to OSU
1930 Enrollment is 15,126
1931 Budget sharply curtailed because of Great Depression and faculty salaries reduced
1932 Klein Committee reduces the number of courses taught to cope with financial difficulty of Great Depression
Salaries reduced because of budgetary crisis
1934 Stadium dormitory opens
OSU Research Foundation begins as an effort to find sponsors for faculty research projects
1935 Arthur Meier Schlesinger, historian, received the Sullivant Medal
Ohio Staters, Inc. begins as a student service society
1936 First Script Ohio formation by OSU Marching Band
Office of Student Financial Aid is established to coordinate financial support for students during the Great Depression.
1938 "Discipline in Civitatem" (education for citizenship) becomes part of the University's coat-of-arms
Development Fund is organized to raise money privately to make up for reductions in state support
Block "O" begins, under the leadership of Clancy Isaacs.
1940 Howard Landis Bevis became seventh president of OSU
Baker Hall is named in honor of Newton D. Baker, distinguished statesman and trustee of OSU
Enrollment reaches 17,568
1942 Committee on War Activities established to coordinate programs
OSU has war contract to develop ways of recognizing aircraft and surface vessels as enemy or friendly
Trustees provide for War Research Laboratory
1943 Trustees approve program for Army Specialized Training Program
Trustees name OSU airport in honor of Don Scott, former football star, who died in military service in Great Britain
1945 Trailer camp set up to expand facilities for returning veterans
1946 First Speaker's Rule in which Trustees forbid the use of university property by candidates for political office
1948 Celebration of Seventy-Fifth Anniversary
