THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY TIMELINE 1870 TO 1899

1870 Cannon Act provides for the creation of the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College
Trustees vote to purchase the Neil Farm as the site of the campus for the new college
1871 Trustees accept architectural plans for the first classroom building, University Hall
1873 Trustees decide to have the college offer a broad curriculum, rather than agriculture and engineering only
College opens its doors on September 17, with 25 students, including two women, the daughters of Professor Norton Townshend
1875 The first dormitory, North Dormitory is in use
1876 Faculty approves the establishment of OSU's Franklin Baseball Club
Faculty refuses students permission to hold a dancing party in University Hall after an evening lecture
1877 Trustees vote to reduce faculty salaries until enrollment passes 200, which was reached the next year.
1878 Name changed to The Ohio State University from The Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College
Students select the official colors of The Ohio State University as scarlet and grey
First class of six graduates on June 19
1879 University offers free lectures on farming, the first example of extension service at OSU
Mary Frank Morrison becomes first woman to receive a B.S. degree from OSU
1881 Trustees order that attendance at daily chapel exercises be compulsory for all students
Trustees decide that electric light was not practical for OSU at this time
Walter Quincy Scott becomes the second president of The Ohio State University, and its youngest in history, following Edward Orton's retirement
1882 Ohio legislature creates the Agricultural Experiment Station, which was to become the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center and later to relocate in Wooster, Ohio
1883 President Walter Q. Scott fails to be re-appointed and is succeeded by William Henry Scott
1886 First M.A. degree awarded to Annie Ware Sabine of Columbus
1887 Former U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes becomes a trustee
Demerit system in which students accumulated points when breaking rules and that led to automatic expulsion is abolished
1890 First Doctor of Science degree awarded
Football begins as an organized sport
1891 Hysell Act yields special tax levy in support of the university
Trustees vote to establish a School of Law
Trustees provide for an athletic field
Enrollment exceeds 500 for the first time (664)
1893 Hayes and Orton Halls are completed
Olive Branch Jones is appointed as the first full-time librarian and serves until 1927
1894 The Onion Club is established as the "strongest" organization of students on the campus
1895 Purchase of first typewriter is approved
Enlargement of Mirror Lake makes it a popular place on campus
James H. Canfield is elected president
1896 OSU ends its preparatory school, evidence that there are sufficient numbers of high schools in Ohio to prepare students for admission to the university
First foreign student receives B.A. from OSU
1897 First OSU-Michigan football game, which Michigan won
Students number more than 1,000 for the first time (1150)
1898 Athletic Board is organized to regulate student athletics
Townshend Hall is dedicated
First OSU basketball game is played against North High School
Trustees authorize the providing of food for campus squirrels
1899 William Oxley Thompson is elected president
College of dentistry is authorized
