Polar Oral History Program This program is administered by The American Polar Society and The Ohio State University's Byrd Polar Research Center Archival Program and funded by the National Science Foundation. The purpose is to document the early years of American polar exploration by interviewing those who were in the polar regions since the 1930's. Ultimately, the goal is to preserve the heritage of American polar exploration for future generations of researchers and scientists. The products of the interviews -- tapes, abstracts, bibliographies records, etc. -- will become the property of The Ohio State University and its Byrd Polar Research Archival Program. Individual tapes and transcripts will become available to researchers as they are completed and a list of completed interviews with links to abstracts will be placed on this web site. In addition, interviews conducted by Dian Belanger as part of the Antarctic Deep Freeze Oral History Project have been donated to the Byrd Polar Research Center Archival Program and are being made available on this website. Currently, the abstracts are based on notes of the interviewer during and after the interview so that the information about the interview would be available promptly. In the future, abstracts will be based on transcripts and will include a table of contents to the index. For more information, please contact the polar curator. |
