Larsen Collection Calvin Larsen went to Antarctica in 1956 as one of the official navy photographers for Operation Deep Freeze. During the 13 months he spent on the ice, he took thousands of images depicting the activities of Operation Deep Freeze and the beginning of the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958). In 1998, Larsen donated 172 Kodachrome slides to the Byrd Polar Research Center Archival Program. All caption information for the images was provided by Larsen. Larsen was interviewed in 2000 as a part of the Polar Oral History Program. To read the abstract or the complete transcript of his interview, please see OSU's Knowledge Bank.
