ARTIFACTS COLLECTION SUBGROUP: PLATES & MUGS CATEGORY
SCOPE & CONTENT
The Plates and Mugs
Category consists of forty plates, coffee cups, and beer
steins made from ceramic, glass or pewter. Dating from
1962 to 2002, most of the artifacts in the category
pertain to John Glenn's careers with NASA and the U.S.
Senate. The collection does contain three items
presented to Glenn to commemorate events he attended
after his retirement from the U.S. Senate in January
1999. Of note in this sub-category is the glass Glenn
received at a Circumnavigators Club dinner in 2001
honoring him with the club's Order of Magellan.
Many of the items in
the NASA sub-category commemorate John Glenn's
Friendship 7 space flight in 1962. Most of these
commemorative items are ceramic plates produced by
commercial firms, though the collection does contain one
ceramic plate hand-crafted by a schoolchild. Other
items commemorate Glenn's return to space as a
crewmember of the Space Shuttle Discovery mission
STS-95. In addition, the NASA sub-category contains a
few souvenir type items pertaining to NASA's Apollo
Program of the late 1960s.
The majority of the
items in the Senate sub-category are coffee cups and
plates pertaining to policy issues or events for which
John Glenn held a particular interest during his senate
career. Other cups and plates concern events or places
in Ohio. Also included are a few items displayed in
Glenn's senate office relating to his interests outside
the political arena, such as baseball and the U.S.
Marine Corps. |
