ARTIFACTS COLLECTION SUBGROUP: MODELS CATEGORY

SCOPE & CONTENT

The Models Category contains sixty-three scale models dating from the 1950s to the 1990s arranged into the four sub-categories of Military, NASA, Post-Senate and Senate.  Comprised mainly of airplane and spacecraft models, the collection helps illustrate John Glenn's lifelong interest in the fields of aeronautics and astronautics.  The models also reflect Glenn's general interest in the art of modeling that dates back to the balsawood airplanes he crafted as a child.

The military sub-category contains an assortment of plastic and metal scale models of the aircraft John Glenn piloted during his twenty-three year career as an aviator in the U.S. Marine Corps.  Included are models of the F4U-1 Corsair fighter-bomber Glenn flew during World War II and the F9F Panther and F-86 Sabre jet aircraft he flew during the Korean War.  Other models are of the various aircraft, such as the F8U-1P Crusader Glenn tested in the mid 1950s as a pilot with the Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River, Maryland.

The NASA sub-category contains a variety of spacecraft models dating from the 1960s to the 1990s.  Included are a number of models of John Glenn's Friendship 7 spacecraft and various models of NASA rocket boosters and spacecraft from the Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle programs.  Also included are a few models of rockets from the space program of the former Soviet Union.  Aerospace companies such as McDonnell and Lockheed Martin presented many of these models to Glenn to commemorate a particular program or to celebrate an anniversary of a specific NASA space mission.

Some models in the Senate category are of aircraft Senator John Glenn supported during their development, including the B1 Bomber and theV-22 Osprey tilt-wing airplane.  Glenn received other models during his Senate career to commemorate various events, such as the christening of the Trident nuclear submarine U.S.S. Ohio in 1979 and the acceptance by the U.S. Army of the M1A Abrams battle tank in 1992.  Also of note in the Senate category are models of various farm tractors Glenn kept on display in his Senate office as a reminder of the time he spent during his youth plowing farm fields around New Concord, Ohio.

The Models Category also contains a couple of models pertaining to the Wright Brothers, which were presented to John Glenn in 2003 at events celebrating the 100th anniversary of powered flight.
