ARTIFACTS COLLECTION SUBGROUP:
MEDALS & MEDALLIONS CATEGORY
SCOPE & CONTENT
The
Medals and Medallions Category contains fifty-six
metal disks cast in either bronze, brass or silver,
ranging in size from one and one-half inches to three
inches in diameter. Dating from the 1950s to 2003,
these medals and medallions commemorate various events,
programs and entities of special interest to John Glenn.
Included is a collector’s set of eight brass medallions
from jamborees held by the Boy Scouts of America from
1950 to 1973. The five military related medallions in
the collection concern various anniversaries of the U.S.
Marine Corps. Items in the remaining bulk of the
collection are evenly divided between the NASA and the
Senate sub-categories.
Most of
the NASA medals and medallions celebrate various
programs, missions, and anniversaries of the space
agency. Included are two limited edition cased sets of
medals commemorating the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo
programs. Other NASA items pertain specifically to John
Glenn’s Friendship 7 space flight in 1962 and to his
return to space in 1998.
Many
items in the Senate sub-category celebrate national
anniversaries, such as the American Bicentennial in 1976
and the 50th anniversary of World War
II. Other medals and medallions commemorate specific
agencies in the federal government or particular places
and events in Ohio. |
