ARTIFACTS COLLECTION SUBGROUP: KEYS CATEGORY

SCOPE & CONTENT

The Keys Category consists of forty-two artifacts arranged into the sub-categories of NASA and Senate. Contained within this category is a wide assortment of ceremonial keys, to cities in the United States, which were presented to John Glenn between the years 1962 and 1995. Glenn received one of the three keys in the NASA sub-category when he visited Trenton, New Jersey after his Friendship 7 space flight in 1962. He received the other two keys as one of the seven Project Mercury astronauts during trips the astronauts made to San Diego, California in 1959 and to Houston, Texas in 1962.

The bulk of the thirty-nine keys in the Senate sub-category date from Glenn’s presidential campaign in 1984. These keys help illustrate the extensive campaigning Glenn undertook in Iowa, New Hampshire, and various southern states from 1982 to 1984. Other keys in the collection date from Glenn’s visits to cities in his home state of Ohio during the 1970s and 1980s.

A listing of the artifacts in the Keys Category is available through the Descriptive Listing link below. To view photographs of the keys click on the Photo Gallery link.
