ARTIFACTS COLLECTION SUBGROUP: FOREIGN GIFTS CATEGORY

SCOPE & CONTENT

The Foreign Gifts Category consists of seventy-seven artifacts arranged into the sub-categories of Annie Glenn, NASA and Senate. The artifacts in this category originate from John and Annie Glenn’s numerous trips to foreign countries during the years 1963 to 1999. Most of the collection consists of assorted small gifts of esteem, which a variety of officials, groups, and private individuals presented to the Glenns to commemorate their visit to a particular country or locale.

The majority of the artifacts in the NASA sub-category date from the NASA goodwill tours John Glenn undertook to Japan in 1963 and to Europe in 1965 and 1966. Other items within the NASA sub-category were presented to Glenn during the trips to Japan and Spain made by the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-95 crewmembers in 1999. Of particular note within this collection is the rosary presented to Glenn by Pope Paulis VI in October 1965 during the first NASA goodwill tour of Europe.

John Glenn obtained many of the artifacts in the Senate sub-category during trips he made in the late 1970s and early 1980s as chairman of the East Asian Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Travels during this time period included fact-finding trips to Japan, the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of China (Taiwan), Korea and the Philippines. Other artifacts date from the congressional delegation trips Senator Glenn participated in during the 1980s and 1990s to the Soviet Union, the Indian sub-continent and the Middle East.  Included in this collection is a pair of hand-carved teak bookends presented to Glenn in July 1978 as the official U.S. representative to the ceremonies establishing the Solomon Islands as an independent country.

Annie Glenn accompanied her husband whenever possible during his tours for NASA and during his travels as a U.S. Senator. The collection contains a number of gifts received by Mrs. Glenn during these trips, as well as items presented to Mrs. Glenn during her own travels to foreign countries.

Note to researchers: Prints and other art works presented to John and Annie Glenn during their trips to foreign countries are located within the Audiovisual Collection Sub-Group.
