ARTIFACTS COLLECTION SUBGROUP: FAMILY ITEMS CATEGORY SCOPE & CONTENT The Family Items Category consists of thirty-three artifacts dating from the 1910s to the 1930s. Included in this category is a Flexible Flyer sled, a pair of strap-on ice skates, and a Lionel train set, all used by John Glenn during his childhood. Of special note is the trumpet Glenn used as a child when playing echo Taps with his father, John H. Glenn, Sr., during Memorial Day ceremonies in New Concord, Ohio. The category also includes the helmet and other military equipment issued to John H. Glenn, Sr. during his U.S. Army service in World War I. Annie Glenn’s uncle, Walter B. Alley, used several other military artifacts in the collection when he was a soldier in the 37th Infantry Division during World War I. Note to Researchers: The majority of the artifacts in the Family Items Category are on exhibit at the John and Annie Historic Site in New Concord, Ohio. |
