ARTIFACTS COLLECTION SUBGROUP: CLOTHING CATEGORY

SCOPE & CONTENT

The Clothing Category consists of one hundred and forty-eight artifacts arranged into the sub-categories of Annie Glenn, Corporate, Military, NASA and Senate. Two of the four Annie Glenn items are t-shirts pertaining to her work with speech pathology. Another t-shirt contains the logo of the USS Ohio, the Trident nuclear submarine Mrs. Glenn christened in 1979. The fourth Annie Glenn item is the dress and apron Mrs. Glenn wore when volunteering with the American Red Cross during the 1970s. The Corporate sub-category contains a couple of t-shirts celebrating Holiday Inns in Orlando, Florida, along with a safari jacket John Glenn wore in Africa during filming in 1967 of the “Great Explorations” television program.

The Military sub-category contains thirty-seven artifacts dating from John Glenn’s career as an aviator in the U.S. Marine Corps. These artifacts include a variety of uniform jackets and pants, worn by Glenn, ranging from utilitarian fatigues to elaborate dress uniforms. Also included are the shoes, hats, shirts and other items worn with the uniforms. Of particular note is a fleece-lined leather flying helmet used by Glenn during World War II and an aviation flight suit he wore as a test pilot in the 1950s.

Most of the thirty-seven artifacts in the NASA sub-category are souvenir t-shirts commemorating John Glenn’s space flights in 1962 and in 1998. The collection does contain a few items worn by Glenn as a NASA astronaut, including two aviation helmets he used in flight training and the blue NASA flight suit he changed into after the completion of his space flight aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft on February 20, 1962. Also included are flight suits, shirts, and a jacket Glenn wore as a payload specialist aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-95 in 1998.

The Senate category contains a number of t-shirts and other types of clothing pertaining to various election campaigns, mostly from John Glenn’s presidential campaign in 1984. Other types of political clothing in the collection concern a variety of public policy issues. Also included are t-shirts commemorating an assortment of NASA programs and aviation events Glenn participated in or supported while he was a U.S. Senator.

Note to Researchers:  Some of the NASA items and all the military uniforms and accouterments in the Clothing Category are on exhibit at the John and Annie Glenn Historic Site in New Concord, Ohio.
