This edition of More's Utopia was published in 1597 by Thomas Creede of London. It is the third printed edition of an English translation from the original Latin by Ralph Robinson, a fellow of Corpus Christi College. Originally printed in 1551, Robinson's translation remains popular today. A Utopia bibliography compiled by R.I. Lakowski of the University of Alberta (Canada) lists 16 modern editions based on Robinson's translation, with a note that there are many more unlisted.
This particular volume has been rebound at least once, adding twelve extra leaves, ten in the front and two in the back of the book. The page trims indicate four leaves of the book may have come from another copy. The current cover is red boarded calf with a gilt double-ruled box on the cover and gilt decorations on the cover edges. The cover joints, corners, and head and foot of the spine are somewhat worn and some pages have had minor repairs, but the text remains as readable as when it was printed more than 400 years ago.
According to WorldCat, there are seven existing copies of this edition: at Loyola Marymount University, UC Riverside, the University of San Francisco, Princeton University, Fordham University, the University of Leeds (UK), and The Ohio State University.
