The Speeches and Statements Sub-series consists of sixteen cubic feet of materials dating from 1962 to 1998, though the bulk of the materials date from 1975 to 1998.  The sub-series contains copies of the speeches and statements made by Senator Glenn during his twenty-four years in the U.S. Senate.  Campaign speeches make up the bulk of the sub-series.  Included are speeches from all of Senator Glenn's senate campaigns, along with numerous speeches he gave on behalf of other political candidates.  The sub-series also heavily documents the multitude of speeches Senator Glenn made during his 1984 presidential campaign.  In addition to political campaigns, the sub-series contains speeches and statements on the wide variety of policy topics and issues of special interest to Senator Glenn during his four terms in the senate.  Notable subjects include energy policy, nuclear non-proliferation and arms control, waste and fraud in federal spending, aging, defense and foreign policy, and the nation's nuclear weapons sites.  The sub-series is arranged in chronological order with generally one speech per folder.  Drafts, outlines, notes, and background materials are included with many of the speeches.  A complete listing of the speeches by title, subject, or type is located in the box and folder inventory.  The listing generally includes information on where the speech was given and the date.

The sub-series also contains a small number of speeches dating prior to Glenn's senate career.  Most of these speeches date from the 1960s when he was a Mercury 7 astronaut with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.  The speeches include his address to a joint session of Congress on February 26, 1962 following his Friendship 7 space flight, and his paper on the space flight delivered to the Third International Space Science Symposium held in May 1962.  Also of note is Glenn's June 1968 eulogy for Robert F. Kennedy.
