Browse the Press Director's Files Sub-series collection
The Press Director's Files Sub-series consists of two and one-half cubic feet of materials dating from 1975 to 1998, though the bulk of the materials date from 1989 to 1998. Included in the sub-series are a number of files containing correspondence and memoranda dating from 1975 through 1980 compiled by Stephen Avakian, Senator Glenn's first press secretary. Items within the files include memoranda on media related issues sent to Senator Glenn by members of his press office, along with high priority correspondence handled by the press office. This correspondence consists of letters with other members of Congress, the White House, foreign dignitaries, and other VIPs.
The remaining materials consist of a series of subject files alphabetically arranged by folder heading. Compiled by a number of individuals who worked at various times as Senator Glenn's press secretary, the files contain information on a wide variety of media related topics, such as interviews, news conferences, newsletters, and editorials and essays authored by Senator Glenn. Other files contain memoranda, correspondence, talking points, press releases, and statements on various legislative issues before the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee. These files date from 1989 to 1993 during the time period Senator Glenn chaired the committee. The files also contain extensive materials on such major topics as the campaign finance hearings held in 1997 by the Governmental Affairs Committee, the investigation during 1990 and 1991 by the Senate Ethics Committee of Senator Glenn's role in the Charles Keating savings and loan scandal, and Senator Glenn's return to space in 1998 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-95. Another series of files provides extensive records on the relocation of the Cleveland Browns professional football team to Baltimore, Maryland during 1995 and 1996. These files include correspondence, memoranda, background reports, hearing transcripts, and other documents pertaining to various proposed fans' rights legislation.
