The newspaper clippings sub-series contains twenty-two cubic feet of materials dating from 1971 to 1998, though the bulk of the items date from 1980 to 1998. Contained within the sub-series are photocopied clippings of a variety of newspaper articles, editorials, and political cartoons on both Senator Glenn and the general political events of the time period. Members of Senator Glenn's press office compiled the clippings for circulation among staff members and for general reference purposes. The staff clipped articles from most major Ohio newspapers, from a variety of nationally prominent newspapers, and from political journals. The first fourteen cubic feet of clippings consist of general articles arranged in chronological order from 1971 through 1998. The sub-series contains a limited amount of clippings dating from the 1970s. From 1980 on the clippings are more extensive, with the amount varying from year to year. Starting in 1994, the clippings are contained in packets, compiled at first on a weekly basis and after March 1997 on a daily basis. From March 1997 on a summery sheet and table of contents accompanies each packet. A special packet contains clippings of the extensive number of articles published in reaction to Senator Glenn's announcement on February 20, 1997 of his plans to retire from the U.S. Senate at the end of 1998.
Another six cubic feet of the sub-series contains clippings on major topics pertaining to Senator Glenn, including his senate re-election campaigns of 1980, 1986, and 1992, along with his 1984 presidential campaign. Also included is extensive coverage of Glenn's return to space in 1998 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-95. Other files contain clippings on his participation as the ranking minority member of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee in the committee's 1997 hearings on campaign finance reform. Also covered is the investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee of Glenn's involvement in the Charles Keating savings and loan scandal.
The remaining two cubic feet of the sub-series contain newspaper clippings on general topics compiled by the staff members of Senator Glenn's offices in Cincinnati and Cleveland.
