The domestic trip files contain nine cubic feet of records dating from 1975 through 1998, with the bulk of the records dating from 1985 through 1998. The first seven cubic feet of materials document the trips made by Senator Glenn to various locations within the United States, mostly to Ohio, during his four terms in office. These files do not include the campaign trips Glenn made during his bid for the 1984 Democratic presidential nomination. Documentation of these trips is located within the Presidential Campaign Files Sub-series. Records on Senator Glenn's foreign trips are located within the Foreign Trip Files Sub-series.
From 1975 through 1984 the records within the sub-series are scanty. Most of the files dated within this time period only contain listings of the trips Senator Glenn made to Ohio and listings of the trips he made to other states. A number of files also pertain to the campaign trips Glenn made on behalf of Walter Mondale and other Democratic candidates, after his own withdrawal from the 1984 presidential election.
Beginning in 1985 the files contain more extensive materials and are, in essence, the accepted invitations files maintained by Glenn's Senate office for events outside the greater Washington, D.C. area. Folders are arranged in chronological order by month or span of months depending upon the amount of travel during a given time period. The type of trip documented varies widely and includes meetings with constituents, committee field hearings, conferences, campaign stops, speech events, and visits to such locales as industrial, defense, and nuclear sites. Materials within the files may include correspondence, memoranda, background reports, briefing papers, and daily schedules. Intermixed within the files are records of trips made by Senator Glenn's wife, Annie.
Included in the sub-series are one and one-half cubic feet of surrogate trip files, dated 1986 through 1998, documenting the trips and appearances made on behalf of Senator Glenn by various staff members. These files are arranged chronologically by senate office. Also included is one-half cubic foot of invitations received by Senator Glenn in 1997 and 1998, but declined for various reasons. These invitations are included as a sampling of the number and variety of invitations typically sent to Senator Glenn during a two-year congressional session.
