The Cartoons Series contains forty-seven political cartoons, dating from 1959 to 1999, pertaining to John Glenn's two assignments to NASA and to his career in the U.S. Senate.  Most of the cartoons within the series are original works of art inscribed to Glenn and signed by the cartoonist.  Included in the series are works by such notable cartoonists as Jim Borgman, Mike Peters, Jeff Stahler, and Gary Trudeau.  Topics for the Senate cartoons include most of Glenn's senate campaigns and his 1984 presidential campaign.  Other Senate cartoons pertain to the clean up of U.S. Department of Energy nuclear sites, Congressional legislation on regulatory reform in 1995, and Glenn's retirement from the U.S. Senate.  The NASA cartoons contain a few items satirizing NASA during the Project Mercury era and several cartoons honoring Glenn for his Friendship 7 space flight.  Also included are numerous cartoons relating to Glenn's return to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998.  Many of these cartoons play upon the fact that Glenn returned to space as a shuttle astronaut at the age of seventy-seven.
