ARTIFACTS COLLECTION SUBGROUP: PLAQUES CATEGORY

SCOPE & CONTENT

The Plaques Category consists of one hundred and seventy-three plaques made from wood, acrylic or glass dating from 1962 to 2004. Plaques in the collection document all aspects of John Glenn's adult life, though the bulk of the collection pertains to his NASA and Senate careers. In addition, the collection contains a number of plaques presented to John Glenn's wife, Anna "Annie" Castor Glenn in the 1980s and 1990s. Many of these plaques honor Mrs. Glenn's humanitarian work, especially with speech and hearing organizations. Other plaques commemorate various events Mrs. Glenn attended, such as the christening of the submarine U.S.S. Ohio in 1979.

Many of the plaques in the NASA sub-category pay tribute to John Glenn for his Friendship 7 space flight in 1962. In the months after his orbital space flight Glenn received numerous plaques from a wide assortment of civic associations, aeronautical organizations, and governmental agencies on the municipal, state, and federal level. Over the following years Glenn received a further assortment of plaques to celebrate various anniversaries of his historic NASA mission. Other plaques in the collection were presented to Glenn in honor of his return to space in 1998 as a crewmember of the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-95.

The majority of the plaques in the collection date from John Glenn's four terms in the U.S. Senate. During his Senate career from 1975 to 1999, Glenn received numerous plaques from a broad variety of associations, organizations, and government agencies. In general, the plaques honor Glenn's work on a specific legislative bill or recognize his support for a particular public policy issue. Other plaques in the collection commemorate Glenn's participation in or assistance with a special event.

The collection also includes several plaques documenting John Glenn's continued involvement in civic affairs since his retirement from the U.S. Senate in January 1999.
