ARTIFACTS COLLECTION SUBGROUP: AWARDS CATEGORY

SCOPE & CONTENT

The Awards Category contains one hundred and thirty-nine items arranged into the sub-categories of Annie Glenn, Corporate, NASA, Post-Senate and Senate. Dating from 1962 to 2006, the collection consists of an extensive assortment of plaques, sculptures and trophies, along with various objects made from silver, porcelain or cut glass. Many of the awards presented to John Glenn honor a particular achievement or recognize his efforts on a specific legislative issue. Other awards pay tribute to Glenn's contributions over time to public service. Notable examples of such tributes acknowledging Glenn's lifetime public policy accomplishments include the following: 

  • Harry S. Truman Public Service Award for 1987 from the Harry S. Truman Foundation
  • Public Service Award for 1999 from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University
  • Public Service Award for 2004 from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
  • Statesmanship Award for 2004 from the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress
Other awards in the collection commemorate John Glenn's achievements in the fields of aeronautics and astronautics. Contained within the collection are some of the most distinguished American aviation honors awarded to an individual, including the following:   
  • Alfred A. Cunningham Aviation Award for 1962 from the U.S. Marine Corps
  • Robert J. Collier Trophy for 1962 from the National Aeronautics Association
  • Centennial Award for 1988 from the National Geographic Society
  • Wernher Von Braun Award for 1997 from the National Space Club
  • National Air and Space Museum Trophy for 2001 from the Smithsonian Institution
  • Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy for 2003 from the National Aeronautics Association

The collection also includes a number of awards presented to Annie Glenn for her leadership in the field of speech and language. In 1999, Mrs. Glenn was inducted into both the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame and the Hall of Excellence of the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges. Also in 1999, the United Way honored John and Annie Glenn together with the Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award.
