About the Work

By any measure, John Foxe's Acts and Monuments ranks among the most popular and influential Renaissance English books. Foxe published the first edition of Acts and Monuments of these Latter and Perillous Dayes, touching Matters of the Church in 1563. This work almost immediately came to be more familiarly known as The Book of Martyrs. It was succeeded in 1570 by a greatly expanded two-volume edition in which Foxe added accounts of early church history to the original stories of martyrdoms. Other editions were published in 1576 (3rd) and 1583 (4th). Versions published after Foxe's death in 1587 include the fifth (1596), the sixth (1610), the seventh (1631/32), the eighth (1641), and the ninth (1684) editions. Each edition added some new materials.
