Every summer, geology students from OSU leave campus and go to Utah for a six week field experience.

Over the years, there have been several students from the Geology Library that have made this trip. I personally went during the summer of 2006. The two main ways to get from Columbus to Utah is to go as a group in the department van, or drive yourself. I drove myself and I was able to experience awesome sights before field camp began.

I left Columbus around midday on Wednesday in order to arrive in Ephraim, UT on the following Monday. Normally this trip can be done in two days, but I was able to stop along the way. Some stops were geologically related, others weren't.

On the trip to Ephraim, I was able to stop at the St. Louis Arch and watch a few minutes of a baseball game from over 600 feet up. I was also able to take a detour near Manhatten, KS and view the Konza Prairie.

Across the plains of Kansas, the next stop was Denver, the I-70 roadcut and the Rocky Mountains.

From the Rockies, it was off to a few National Parks and Monuments.
The first one visited was Colorado National Monument { website / slideshow }. After this I continued on to eastern Utah and visited Arches National Park { website / slideshow }. Arches NP is home to the famous delicate arch. Be prepared to hike if you want to see it up close and personal. It is located at the end of a 1.5 mile hike, all uphill.

From Arches, the next place visited was Canyonlands National Park { website / slideshow }. The best part about Canyonlands NP is how close you are able to get to the canyons themselves. It is possible to step to the edge of a cliff and look straight down several hundred feet.

It is possible after Canyonlands NP to visit Capitol Reef National Park { website }. Slides from Capitol Reef can be found in the Miscellaneous and Field Camp slide shows. Capitol Reef was visited during field camp.

From Capitol Reef NP, it is a fairly short drive to Salina, Utah (this is where the picture of the rabbit came from at the end of the miscellaneous slide show). From there, it is a another short drive to Ephraim.

Field camp was hard work, but at the same time, the sights and insight was well worth it. From White Hill to Ephraim Canyon to Capitol Reef to Fillmore Craters, the locations visited are like nothing that can be found in Ohio.
