This
is, perhaps, one of the more "representational"
and non-diagrammatic of the illustrations Petheo would
draw in Rise of the West. In this image, Petheo
depicts Mahatma Gandhi's (1869--1948) message: a combination
of Hindu asceticism and Christian pacifism, which together
produced Gandhi's idea of non-violent resistance to British
colonial rule. With his left hand, Gandhi is rejecting
ideas from Hinduism and Islam as well as the Christianity
and Unitarianism taught in British schools. These ideas
are the ones held by India's urban classes, who nevertheless
warmly receive Gandhi's message. They stand close together,
some embracing, which represents the mass movement Gandhi
created. |
