Stadium Dedications: Shared Moments
1927 Michigan Stadium Dedication program 1922 Ohio Stadium Dedication program

The Buckeyes and the Wolverines met for the dedication of both Ohio Stadium and Michigan Stadium.  Five years apart, the game festivities included the governors of both states, the university presidents, and of course a football game.

Ohio Stadium was completed just in time for the planned dedication day of October 21, 1922.  The dedication game was actually the third game at Ohio Stadium, the first being against Ohio Wesleyan on October 7, and the second against Oberlin on October 14.  The dedication game was a huge success with over 72,000 people attending.  The only disappointment of the day was the loss to Michigan, 19-0.  The next Monday, the student newspaper, The Lantern, noted that: “All walks of life were represented when leaders came from far and near to pay their respects to the Ohio State University’s new athletic plant.”

The dedication of Michigan Stadium was held on October 22, 1927.  Similar to 1922, this was the third game in Michigan Stadium, the first being against Ohio Wesleyan on October 1, and the second against Michigan State University on October 8.  The dedication ceremonies were simple but impressive, and the day was complete with Michigan’s win of 21-0.  Despite the score, Ohio State had played well, as the Michigan Alumnus noted: “Ohio must look back to the day as one of defeat-but with high honor.  Any team-which, with a score of 21-0 against it, can rise in the last minutes of play and drive from their own soil to within a few feet of the conqueror’s goalline is a great team. Ohio did that.”
