THE DONALD B. COOPER COLLECTION:
EPIDEMIC DISEASE AND MEDICINE IN BRAZIL AND LATIN AMERICA
(Guide prepared by John M. Bennett,
The Ohio State University Libraries, 1998)
INTRODUCTION
This is primarily a collection of photocopied and/or transcribed documents and publications,
assembled
and annotated by Dr. Donald B. Cooper, a historian at The Ohio State University during the
decades of
the 1970's through the 1990's. The collection also includes some original documents and printed
materials, and several reels of microfilm, parts of which are accompanied by photocopies. Most of
the
material is from the late 19th through the early 20th centuries, and is focused on epidemic disease
and its
social and historical contexts in Brazil, and to a lesser extent in other countries of Latin America
and the
world. The principal diseases in question are yellow fever, cholera, smallpox, plague, and leprosy.
This unique material was gathered from a variety of archives and libraries as a source for a
projected, and
partially completed, book on disease, medicine, and public health in Brazil. The collection includes
draft
chapters of that projected book, and numerous notes, draft texts, and related materials by Cooper,
plus his
notes and other materials related to an earlier book he published on epidemic disease in colonial
Mexico
City.
This collection will be a most valuable resource for anyone researching the topics of epidemic
disease in
Brazil and Latin America, medical history, medical education, yellow fever, cholera, smallpox,
plague,
leprosy and other diseases, public health, sanitary measures in ports, urban and rural sanitary
measures,
medical and epidemiological research, biographies of particular figures important in Brazilian and
Latin
American medicine and public health such as Oswaldo Cruz, Carlos Chagas, Carlos Seidl, and
many
others, quarantine, vaccination, mosquitos as disease vectors, tropical disease and medicine, and
other
related matters.
In addition to this document collection, there is in The Ohio State University Libraries a
significant
collection of published books, pamphlets, and serials, all catalogued individually, on the same
topics.
Some of these publications are quite scarce, and may not be available anywhere else. All these
materials
were collected by Dr. Cooper, and donated to the Library.
