Biography of Nelson Algren, 1909-1981

Nelson Algren (1909-1981) is most famous as the author of The Man with the Golden Arm, a novel which won the first National Book Award ever granted (1950). Algren's career spanned over five decades and included four other novels, three travel books, and several collections of short stories. (Songster-Burnett) His most productive years were 1940-1960 when four novels and a prose-poem, "Chicago: City on the Make," were published. The 50s were also the years of the McCarthy era. Algren was always politically engaged with the left, although he did not believe in rigid party alliances or unexamined allegiances. His friendship with Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, his later travels to Southesast Asia and the Far East, his continued concern about those oppressed by legal and political systems, were part of a lifetime commitment to observing and recording social processes in an implicitly political frame.
