WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS PAPERS
SPEC.CMS.40
INTR0DUCTI0N
This collection of materials, originally gathered by James W.
Grauerholz, William S. Burroughs' assistant and editor, includes
drafts and editorial materials for many of WSB's publications;
copies of many of WSB's publications; other WSB texts and notes;
correspondence, fan mail, clippings and printed matter received
from the mid-1970's to the mid-1980's; books and magazines
received or acquired during the same period; Burroughs
Communications business, travel, and tour files from that period;
and much other material.
In addition to providing source material for the study of WSB's
life and works, this collection provides a wealth of information
about the avant-garde literary, art, and music worlds of the
1970's and 1980's, primarily in North America, but also in Europe
and elsewhere. There is abundant correspondence, manuscript, and
published material from a wide variety of writers and other
artists, both contemporaries of WSB and younger artists and
writers. Many of the latter are also represented in OSU's Avant
Writing Collection.
Among the highlights of this collection are drafts, MSS, and
editorial materials for the following WSB or other publications:
Letters to Allen Ginsberg, Cities of the Red Night,Cobble Stone
Gardens, Ah Pook is Here, The Third Mind,Blade Runner, The Book
of Breeething, Early Routines,Port of Saints, Junky [Junkie], The
Place of Dead Roads, and Allen Ginsberg's Journals. Other
highlights include several notebooks of Brion Gysin's; many WSB
cut-up texts; correspondence and documentation regarding The Nova
Convention; transcripts of WSB's 1974 CCNY lectures; tape
recordings; and correspondence with Alan Ansen, Brion Gysin,
Charles Henri Ford, John Giorno, Harold Norse, Allen Ginsberg,
Steve Lacy, Paul Bowles, and many others.
It should be noted that not all material on a given topic is
necessarily in the same box; for example, files pertaining to the
novel Cities of the Red Night are scattered throughout this collection. Further material on any given topic may also be found
in other WSB collections in the OSU Libraries.
Throughout this guide, "WSB" refers to William S. Burroughs, "JG"
refers to James W. Grauerholz, and "WSB, Jr." refers to William S.
Burroughs, Jr. Folders preceded by an asterisk [*] are in oversize
boxes.
Provenance note:
This collection was acquired by OSU in 1988. This guide was
compiled by Jane Falk in 1998.
