SANDRA L. HUGHES THEATRE PAPERS:   28 boxes of administrative materials, programs, notes, reviews, production and other materials documenting Hughes's work as director, choreographer, performer, and playwright.

Sandra L. Hughes is a professional director, performer, playwright and choreographer. In 1974 she cofounded and became artistic director of the Great American Mime Experiment, known since 1991 as Gateway Performance Productions. She has created 23 original productions for the company such as mime dramas, innovative works combining mask theatre, mime, dance and original music. Her productions have toured to theatres, festivals, museums, art centers throughout United States, Europe, Canada and Mexico. Beyond her work for her company Sandra Hughes is a produced and award-winning playwright. She has also served on the theatre faculty at Lake Erie College, University of Akron and Antioch College. Sandra Hughes is a member of the Southeast Playwrights Project, the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts and Alternate Roots. Her company receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Georgia Council for the Arts, Fulton County Arts in Atlanta and other organizations.

The collection includes administrative materials, articles of incorporation of her company (Great American Mime Experiment), programs, notes, reviews, correspondence, costume designs for her production Once Upon an Orchestra (1976), together with the Cleveland Orchestra, directed and choreographed by Sandra Hughes who was also the principal performer; production materials (programs, awards, notes) for Mime Dreaming, created for television by Sandra Hughes (WVIZ PBS television, Cleveland, Ohio, 1976); production materials for The Keeper, a mime drama, conceived and directed by Sandra Hughes, performed at Lake Erie College, 1978 and Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio, 1979; photographs, touring brochure, program, correspondence, reviews for the production The Image Makers, directed, choreographed and also performed by Sandra Hughes at Alliance Theatre, Atlanta, Georgia, 1984 as well as materials related to the production of Lysistrata by Aristophanes, directed by Sandra Hughes, 1986, and a touring brochure of Gateway Performance Productions (2000-2002).
