CHARLES H. MCCAGHY COLLECTION OF EXOTIC DANCE FROM BURLESQUE TO CLUBS: The history of the popular culture of burlesque performances and nightclub life from exotic dance to stripping is highlighted in this collection of magazines, photographs, books, sound recordings.
Dr. Charles H. McCaghy is a professor emeritus of the Department of Sociology at Bowling Green State University, where he specialized in criminology and the study of deviance. His publications include the books Deviant Behavior: Crime, Conflict, and Interest Groups (Macmillan, 1976) and Crime in American Society (1980), as well as numerous articles on social deviance and stripping, many written with colleague Dr. James K. Skipper, Jr. The materials in the McCaghy Collection of Exotic Dance from Burlesque to Clubs come from Dr. McCaghy's personal collection of striptease research and memorabilia
The McCaghy Collection contains a wide variety of materials, spanning from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day, and exploring all aspects of striptease in performance, from early burlesque\vaudeville to modern strip clubs and the neo-burlesque movement. These materials include: information on burlesque clubs and venues in various cities; photos, press clippings, promotional materials, and miscellaneous items related to over 1500 different strippers and burlesque performers, including Lydia Thompsonand Unveiled Philadelphia).
The collection also includes over 150 striptease-related books, more than 220 video recordings, and numerous miscellaneous materials, including comic books, sheet music, trading cards, toys and other novelty items, information about carnival performance and oriental dance, and the personal scrapbook of Robert and Vanessa Cartwright, a Toledo couple who followed burlesque in their area and formed friendships with many performers.
