SYLLABUS  - COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • To acquire, through lectures, class discussions, and independent projects, both a theoretical and a practical understanding of how music (scores, recordings) and information on music (books, articles, electronic resources) are organized, cataloged, indexed, and retrieved in a modern research library, richly endowed with on-line databases, and linked to other Internet resources.
  • To gain experience and develop critical judgment in using the most important current types of general and music information resources: databases, catalogs, indexes, and reference tools (regardless of language), whether they be in print, in microform, or computer based resources.
  • To gain an appreciation of scholarly method and documentation in music research, through the completion of projects designed to develop bibliographic skill and qualitative judgment.
