Nordic Music Archive

The Nordic Music Archive was established at Ohio State University in 1987 at the invitation of the eminent choral director Norman Luboff, a friend of OSU. It consists primarily of scores and recordings by contemporary composers from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, though composers from previous periods are well represented also. Most of the materials have been, and continue to be, donated by the music information centers and major publishing houses in these countries. All scores in the Nordic Music Archive circulate under standard local and interlibrary loan rules. Compact discs circulate for three weeks and can be renewed unless requested by another patron. Like books, scores, and other items, most of our multimedia items can be requested online. All Nordic Archive materials are cataloged to AACR2 standards on OCLC, and also appear in the OSU Library Catalog.

The scores are located in their own reserve shelving area and are organized according to the Library of Congress classification system; the recordings are interfiled in our Media Center. The OSU Library Catalog may be searched by call number, composers and performers ("author"), title, subject (form/genre) and keyword. A special sub-location code for the Nordic score collection can be used as a delimiter in conjunction with searches.   • Swedish Music Information Center. (Click on "Contemporary Classical" and then choose links for composer biographies, lists of works, or descriptions of works.) Presents biographies (in Swedish and English) and virtually complete, up-to-date work lists of over 200 Swedish composers. Very detailed annotation provided for individual works. Work lists include published scores, manuscripts, and sound recordings (including LPs).
  • Finnish Music Information Center. Includes profiles (in Finnish and English), full-text articles (with English translations), worklists, bibliographies, discographies, and photographs of over 125 composers.
  • Norwegian Music Information Center. Provides biographies of nearly 100 composers in Norwegian and English.
  • Iceland Music Information Center. Presents biographies and detailed work lists (in Icelandic only) of numerous composers.
  • Samfundet (Society for the Publication of Danish Music). Presents short biographies of contemporary composers.
  • DaCapo Records. Includes biographies of Danish composers represented in their compact disc catalog. Click on the link for "Classical" and then drag down on the box for "Classical composers."
