ACR and YOU
The Advisory Committee on Research (ACR) at Ohio State University Libraries offers support for research to library faculty in terms of funding, time, and advice.Research Grants
ACR offers funding for
research projects. The amount granted is based on the proposal submitted to ACR
and the availability of funds. This funding allows an
author to cover costs in relation to preparing camera-ready copy, research
travel, postage, student assistance, etc.

Research Time
To have release time for research, one may request from ACR a Special Research Assignment (SRA). The SRA allows a faculty member to be released, once per year, from regular job responsibilities in order to concentrate on a research project. The maximum length is twelve weeks, although leaves may be spaced over a period of time to lessen the impact on your department. Faculty considering a leave should inform their supervisor that they are submitting an application. A report regarding the leave is due to the Director of Libraries within 30 days after the completion of an SRA. Please note that an SRA is distinct from UPT (Unassigned Professional Time), the weekly research time equivalent to 20 percent of the work week allowed all library faculty. Click here for an SRA request form.
After completing seven years at OSUL, a faculty member may request through ACR a period of Faculty Professional Leave (FPL). The Faculty Professional Leave allows one to have from three to twelve months of release time to concentrate on one's research. A leave of three – six months is compensated at 100 percent of one's salary; a leave of six – twelve months, at two thirds. An FPL may be taken concurrently with an SRA. (see: http://oaa.osu.edu/OAAP_PHandbook.php Book2: Faculty) Forms for FPL are available from the OAA Web site at: http://oaa.osu.edu/formspage.php.
International Conference Funding
The committee also offers complementary funding of up to $2,000 for travel when a faculty member is invited to give a presentation at an international conference. ACR funding may be matched by an equal amount available from the Director of Libraries for the same conference. One such trip may be funded every two years. International travel does not include Canada.
Funding for domestic travel to a professional conference is available from the Committee on Faculty Benefits, Privileges, and Responsibilities (CFBPR). Information about this benefit is available at the CFBPR web site.
Grant Application Assistance
Faculty may request up to four weeks of leave and/or funding if needed to apply for an external grant. This time may be used for writing an external grant proposal as well as any preliminary research or travel necessary for a successful grant request. Click here for a Grant SRA/Funding Application.
