The Libraries’ Tech Center facility — to be built at 1165 Kinnear Road, just west of central campus — is moving steadily through the University’s processes for building new spaces. This past Tuesday, July 7, the Acock Associates Architects’ “schematic design” received its formal hearing from representatives of Facilities Operations & Development, OIT, and the Libraries. The project now continues into “design development” phase, where more detailed planning, drawing and review are completed.
The time line for the project remains as:
*Design development phase: through 17 August 2009
*Construction documents phase: through 5 October 2009
*Building permits and bidding period: through 7 December 2009
*Contracts completion: through 1 February 2010
*Construction: through 21 June 2010
*Final space preparation and move-in: through 23 August 2010
The Ackerman Library has also been renamed, and will now be known as the Libraries’ Tech Center for the duration of the Libraries’ remaining time in that facility. The name change is intended to avoid public confusion over the role of the facility, since the building is no longer open to the public.
Questions about the Tech Center can be directed to Wes Boomgaarden, Ryan Langhurst or Sally Rogers.

To protect the new cork flooring in the Thompson Library, an additional coat of protective polyurethane needs to be applied to each area of the building with that type of flooring.
Please note that for some of you, your office/work space may NOT be accessible at all for a few days. NO traffic (walking, book trucks or anything) can be allowed on the cork floors during the application process and for a few days afterward. We will identify those of you in this situation, and will help make other arrangements to accommodate your work needs.
Below and attached are the schedules, areas, and diagrams that indicate the times and locations of these applications. Please print these out and refer to them as they relate to your area of the Thompson building.
Phase 1: Monday, June 29 through Sunday, July 5 (color-coded BLUE in the diagram): This will include rooms 200 (Grand Reading Room), 202 (Mortar Board fireplace room Room), 205 (Maps), X209C (corridor), and the quiet study areas rooms 450 and 455 on 4th floor. No traffic will be permitted in these areas until Monday, July 6. In addition, there can be no access to the Reference collection being housed in the Grand Reading Room (200).
Phase 2A: Wednesday, July 22 through Tuesday, July 28 (color-coded GREEN). This will include the east portion of the remaining corridors on levels 2, 3 and 4, affecting those in suites 221, 222, 304, 305, 321, 322, 418 and 419. No traffic will be permitted in these areas until Wednesday, July 28. Access to these work areas will be through suites 255, 250, 350 and 355 respectively. Those in suites 418 and 419 will not have access to their offices during this period.
Phase 2B: Tuesday, July 28 through Sunday, August 2 (color-coded TAN). This will include the west portion of the remaining corridors on levels 2, 3 and 4, affecting those in suites 250, 255, 350, and 355. No traffic will be permitted in these areas until Monday, August 3, the scheduled opening day for the public to the Thompson Library.
Details that might affect access to your own work area in Thompson:
When the east side corridors on levels 2, 3 and 4 are being treated, those whose offices are EAST of the stacks tower will be required to use the farthest WEST suite entrance to access their offices. So, as an example, during Phase 2A of the corridor treatments (July 22-July 27), if your office is in Suite 221 you must use the entrance to Suite 255. Those of you in western offices (suites 250, 255, 350, 355), your access will be through suite 222, 221, 322 and 321 respectively.
For clarification of any of this, please contact Mark Moziejko, Ryan Langhurst or Wes Boomgaarden.

To keep our moving company occupied during a gap between collection moves, we have agreed to move the Sullivant Library Reference collection to the Thompson Grand Reading Room earlier than planned. We now expect to start the move on Thursday, June 25, to be completed by the end of the day on Friday, June 26.
This means the collection will not be available to the public from the end of the day on Wednesday, June 24, until Monday, August 3. If you receive requests for access to the physical pieces housed in this collection, please forward them to Sarah Murphy, 247-7236, Thompson Room 221A.
If you have questions, contact Graham Walden, 688-8775. Graham’s current office location is 280B Sullivant. He is scheduled to move to Thompson Room 255A on July 14.

The Thompson Library Aesthetics guidelines are posted posted here:
thompson-library-aesthetics-guidelines.pdf
The guidelines, which apply to offices/shared work spaces and public spaces, were approved by the Executive Committee based on recommendations from the Aesthetics Task Force established earlier this year. Exec did make two changes to the Task Force recommendations that were presented at earlier staff meetings: prohibiting plants (live, silk or artificial) anywhere in the building, including offices and shared spaces; and limiting the location of coffee makers to the staff lounge and kitchenette areas.
The issue of plants will be revisited after we are in the building; if the Libraries’ budget permits in the future, the Task Force recommended hiring a nursery service to install and maintain plants throughout the building. The Task Force will meet after we are all settled into the building, review the guidelines and consider how we might handle “special requests” from staff who may have a demonstrated need for some aspect of the guidelines to be modified.
Please keep in mind that the purpose of these guidelines is to safeguard the restoration work performed during the renovation, maintain the integrity of the library’s energy and light management systems, ensure the facility does not become “cluttered” with randomly-placed signs and notices, while providing comfortable work settings for staff.
