The shift is complete

As of July 18, 2007, the shift at SEL has been completed. The third floor is completely empty of books and journals. Since the 18th of July, we have been condensing volumes within the compact stacks to make room for more books and journals from our final, clean-up Boolean. This final list should catch most of the volumes which may have been missed the first time around.

August 6th, 2007

Day 47

We have finally pulled all journals from the 4th floor and have completed all of the lists of pre-1975 volumes which are headed to the compact stacks. Some journals ranging from Z7144.N8 S3 1951 - Z7935.H9 1974 are sitting on carts in my office. They will be shelved tomorrow once we’ve made room for them in the compact stacks.

We’ve also started shifting in the northwest corner of the 4th floor and have condensed through TS320.M36 v. 41. We will continue to condense toward the northwest corner of the floor to make room for the QD - QR volumes from the 3rd floor. These call numbers will move to the south side of the 4th floor once we’ve finished condensing.

We will begin moving the QC volumes to the 2nd floor tomorrow morning.

Day 46

We continued on the 4th floor and moved pre-1975 journals through TS227.A1 W34 to the compact stacks. We should be finished with this list on Monday. This is the last of the lists, so we can then concentrate on clearing the 3rd floor.

We condensed everything on the 2nd floor and have plenty of extra shelving….about one and a half bays of empty shelving for the QC’s. We can begin moving the QC’s from the 3rd floor on Monday. We can also start condensing on the 4th floor on Monday to make room for the QD’s - QR’s.

Day 45

We did not get much done today, because the compact stacks are not working in the TA - Z range which is where we’ve been shifting. The problem has been reported, and the technicians said that they would be here Friday morning. Many students left early today, because there was not much that they could do. They pulled journals from the 4th floor through TP155.A1 T351 v. 5, but could not shelve all of these. Carts of journals ranging from TP1.S55 - TP155.A1 T351 are sitting in my office.

We are making progress condensing on the 2nd floor. We have condensed everything through QB377.G83 and are nearly finished.
We should have more than enough shelving to house all of the QC’s from the 3rd floor.

Day 44

We continued on the 4th floor and moved pre - 1975 journals through TP1.K45 v. 39 to the compact stacks. I also have a cart of pre-1975 journals ranging from TP1.J87 v. 10 through TP1.K45 v.39 in my office which will be shelved tomorrow.

We completed the list of journals with year problems and moved all pre-1975 journals on the list through Z6033.C9 I5.

On the 2nd floor shifting, we condensed volumes through QA564.L484 1998 to about the 3rd row in the 2nd bay from the south end of the floor.

Day 43

We continued on the 4th floor and moved most pre-1975 journals through TP1.D792 to the compact stacks. We’re at the point where we are constantly shifting volumes eastward within the compact stacks so that everything coming from upstairs will fit into the basement.

We also continued on the list of journals with year problems and moved pre-1975 journals through TL787.A25 to the compact stacks. We’re nearly finished with that list.

A cart of books from all floors still sits in my office from yesterday. We will shelve these in compact stacks tomorrow.

We condensed volumes to the south side of the floor through QA297.S4872 v. 27 n. 5-6.

Day 42

We continued on the 4th floor and moved all pre-1975 journals through TN1.C21 to the compact stacks. A cart of TN.C52 journals ranging from 1960 - 1964 is in my office and will be shelved in compact tomorrow. We also did more shifting within the TD - TN range.

We also continued on the list of journals with year problems and completed through TE1.H634. We are working on many of the thin journals which are shelved in boxes on the 4th floor. These are very tedious and time-consuming, because we need to individually open and check the year in each journal and there are many of them.

Finally, we continued condensing volumes toward the south side of the 2nd floor and have condensed through QA166.25 H36 2007. This is going much quicker than is the compact stack shifting, and we’re really creating a lot of space on the 2nd floor.

I should also mention that I have a cart full of pre- 1975 journals ranging from H through TA. These are journals which were initially not on the shelf when we were pulling from the lists. We gave these lists to Cheryl and her students found these books when they searched the stacks. We’ll shelve these in the compact stacks as soon as we get a chance.

Day 41

We continued on the 4th floor and moved pre-1975 journals through TL716.A1 A513 to the compact stacks. A cart of journals ranging from TL526.G7 A33 v. 101 - TL716.A1 A513 is in my office. We also shifted within the TK - TL region in the compact stacks to make room for more journals.

We also worked on the journals with years problems list and shifted pre-1975 journals through TD420.A2 U5 to the compact stacks. We had to shift in the QD - QH area to make room for more journals. We will also need to shift in the TD and TE area next week to create more space. This constant shifting within the compact stacks tends to slow things down considerably.

Finally, we continued condensing on the south side of the 2nd floor and shifted through QA27 C5Y262 1984.

Day 40

We continued on the 4th floor and moved pre-1975 journals through TL500.N603.A3 to the compact stacks. We also continued to shift within the TK range in the compact stacks.

We also continued on the list of journals with years problems and moved pre-1975 journals through QD481.A1 T6 to the compact stacks. A cart of journals from this list ranging from QD400.A1 A3 v. 8 - QD481.A1 T6 v. 8 is in my office and should be shelved tomorrow. There is not enough space in the compact stacks to fit them. We would need to do a major shift in the QD’s to make room for them, so we plan to set up a small shelving unit near the QD 400 area in compact, so that we can place those volumes on that shelving unit.

We continued condensing on the 2nd floor and moved volumes through QA1.M42 1977 - 78 toward the southeast corner. Signage has been added to the end of each row to reflect changes.

Finally, one team continued working on the list of monograph sets with years problems by physically checking and recording the years in each book which had been moved to the compact stacks.

June 14th, 2007

Day 39

We continued on the 4th floor and moved pre-1975 journals through TK6541.I55 to the compact stacks. We also had a lot of shifting to do in the TK range in compact stacks in order to make room for more journals.

A team of students also started on the list of serials with years problems (journals which have no years in the year fields). These take time because each journal must be individually opened to the first few pages in order to check the year. Some, but not all, get moved. It depends on whether or not they fall in the 1960 - 74 range. They completed through QC100.U565.

A few students worked on the actual lists (highlighting items not on shelf, checking years of volumes already moved to compact stacks) to ensure that they’re ready to give to Nancy or SEL circ. staff for updating.

Finally, we continued to work on condensing volumes on the 2nd floor and condensed through Q334 C66 1995. We’ve stopped condensing on the 4th floor for now but will resume when we complete the list of 4th floor journals which we’re currently working on.
