Science Cafe: Some Mathematics in Old Babylonian Times

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 @ 6:30 pm (SEL 090/070)

Science Cafe will review “Some Mathematics in Old Babylonian Times.” 123.pngSome of the same mathematical topics that we teach today were also taught to students in Mesopotamian some 4,000 years ago. The way that these topics were understood and taught was very different from today’s practices. Traces of these older approaches are found in clay tablets from Mesopotamia: student worksheets, teachers’ problem sheets, tables of information, and teachers’ manuals. The presentation will review examples of mathematics in these ancient manuscripts and consider how some of these approaches might be useful today. The presenter is Eric Conrad, of the OSU department of Mathematics.
