P-PZ40
This table is used for both Chinese, Japanese and Korean publications.
The P-PZ40 Table is made with an intention to help cuttering publications of an author’s works. Basically it approches the author’s works in 5 categories: collections (全集), selections (選集), separate works, translations and biography or criticism. First, we need to figure out the author’s classification (it usually contains a cutter determined by the author’s name – let’s call it the 1st cutter), and then we apply the P-PZ40 table to further cutter a specific publication.
The mystical .x thing in the table represents the “1st cutter” we give to a specific author! For example, the LC Classification for 鲁迅 Lu Xun is PL2754.S5, so in this case .x = .S5 See examples below.
Collections: .x date
The author’s classification plus the publication date. Examples,
鲁迅全集 Lu Xu quan ji. Published in 1961
– PL2754 .S5 1961
郭沫若全集. 文学编 Guo Moruo quan ji. Wen xue bian. Published in 1982.
– PL2778 .O2 1982
**Note, however, 郭沫若全集. 历史编 Guo Moruo quan ji. Li shi bian is classified as DS735 .K93 — because the nature of the work is no longer literary, but about history (K93 is the cutter for the author’s name adopted as Kuo, Mo-jo on LC Classification).
Sellections or sellected works: .xA6 date
Author’s classification plus (2nd cutter) A6, then further distinguished by publication dates. Examples
魯迅選集 (註釋本). Published in 1968
– PL2754.S5 A6 1968
Separate works: xA61-.xZ458
A specific work of an author is distinguished by the title, and the cutter for the title has to fall in between A61 to Z458. Examples
山乡巨变 / 周立波著 Shan xiang ju bian / Zhou Libo zhu. Published in 2002
– PL2851.L5 S5 2002 (PL2851.L5 is the LC Classification established for the author’s name adopted as Chou Li-po. S5 is the cutter of the title i.e., Shan…)
A translation of collected or sellected works:
This is further divided by languages and publication dates. See the table for details.
Translation of separate works is the call number of the original work suffixed with a number from the Translation Table. For details, see Cataloging Translations. Examples,
Great changes in a mountain village, a novel An English translation of 周立波’s 山乡巨变
– PL2851.L5 S51 1961 (PL2851.L5 S5 is the call number for the Chinese title, and the figure 1 indicates it’s an English translation)
