NOTE: This is an update and there are changes in the procedures!
This post explains how to treat books that are accompanied with cd-roms or other optical discs.
When you catalog a book that is accompanied with one or more CD-ROMs, audio discs, or other types of optical discs such as DVDs:
- In the bibliographic record, use the “e” subfield to describe the accompanying materials in the 300 field. Example:
- 300 …… + $e 1CD-ROM (4 3/4 in.)
- 300 …… + $e 3 sound discs (in case)
- 300 …… + $e 2 DVDs
- If in a multi volume set, only one volume has CD-ROM, you can add a local note.
Example: 590 v.5 accompanied by DVD. - Add a regular item record for the book.
- Add an item record for the accompanying CD-ROM, and enter a volume identifier “cdrom” in the volume field. (The old practice was to use v.2cdrom, but this has become obsolete!) If there are two CD-ROMs, make two item records for each and use “cdrom1″ and “cdrom2″ respectively.
- In the item record for the CD-ROM, code the IMESSAGE field with “c” (= check for CD [used for CDs and DVDs]).
