Jesse Owens Exhibition at Thompson Library through May 2

Seventy-five years ago, Jesse Owens became an American icon after winning an amazing four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Before he left for this historic event, Owens was a student athlete competing at Ohio Stadium; after he returned, he was the guest of honor riding in a ticker tape parade in New York City.

In honor of his accomplishments and in conjunction with OSU’s celebration of his Olympic achievements, The Ohio State University Archives has created a display of Owens’ artifacts, photographs, and documents that highlight each stage of Owens’ life: his youth in Cleveland, his relationship to OSU as a student and life-time Buckeye, his record as an Olympian, and his service as an ambassador to the world.  Students, faculty, staff, and the public are invited to come see the exhibition which includes artifacts such as Owens’ Olympic diary, his bronzed shoe from 1935, and his Congressional Gold Medal.

The exhibition is located in the Thompson Library, 1858 Neil Ave., in the display area on the first floor outside the Gallery.  The Thompson Library is open Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m. -2 a.m.; Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Saturday,  8 a.m. -10 p.m.;  Sunday,  11 a.m. -2 a.m.

By land, sea, and air: Assessing ecosystem impacts from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill

March 2, 6:30 p.m., Science and Engineering Library, 175 W. 18th Ave.

More than 500 km of Louisiana’s marsh shoreline were contaminated from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.  The physical and chemical effects of oil spills can have both short- and long-term impacts on wetland function, including the interruption of benthic biogeochemical processes, decreased primary production, and increased susceptibility to marsh collapse. In this talk, Raymond Kokaly will present data collected during field surveys and airborne hyperspectral surveys, conducted as part of the Federal emergency response, that were used to assess the rate of oil flowing from the well and are being used to evaluate the impact of oil contamination in marshland ecosystems.

About our Speaker

Raymond Kokaly is an expert on the application of imaging spectrometer data (also known as hyperspectral remote sensing) to defining the biochemical state of vegetation. He is a research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. He received a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1993 and a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1991. His publications on the use of hyperspectral data include discriminating vegetation species in Yellowstone National Park, detecting the distributions of invasive plants in Arches National park, and studying the recovery of ecosystems from fire in southern California. Mr. Kokaly authored a recent review article on the application of imaging spectroscopy to characterizing canopy biochemistry and its application to ecosystem studies. Mr. Kokaly served on the US Government’s Flow Rate Technical Group, charged with developing an official scientific-based estimate of the flow of oil in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

EasyBib Library Edition Automatic Bibliography Composer

Did you try EasyBib Library Edition?  Tell us what you thought in this short survey:

http://go.osu.edu/ebibsurvey.

EasyBib Library Edition is an automatic bibliography composer being beta tested by the OSU Libraries. More than 500,000 new citations are added each day during peak periods of use, such as at the end of university terms. Students simply search or enter bibliographic data of a particular source and EasyBib formats the citation, alphabetizes the works cited list and exports it to word-processing software. Students can also use EasyBib’s notebook feature to dynamically organize their research information associated with their citations.

LibQUAL Survey Underway

The OSU Libraries is participating in LibQUAL+® Lite, a survey developed by the Association of Research Libraries to measure library service quality and identify best practices.  You may have received an email requesting that you participate by completing the survey.  The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete; you will be asked to rate your “desired” and “perceived” level of service from the University Libraries.

if you choose to participate, you can enter a drawing for a gift card from Brenen’s Cafe, the OSU Bookstore, Aveda Institute, Wired Out, Bike Source or the North Star Cafe.

New Basketball Uniforms include Thompson Library depiction

The Ohio State men’s basketball team began wearing new Nike uniforms for its home game against Penn State January 15 that include a representation of the Thompson Library. Thad Matta, head coach of the Buckeyes, was adamant an academic building be featured on the jersey to make certain the team continues to recognize the meaning behind the term “student-athlete” each time the team takes the floor. After consulting with Ohio State President Gordon Gee, it was decided the library would be the most appropriate building.

Elsevier Purchase Expands OhioLINK Journal Offerings by 3.4 Million Articles

Ohio’s college students and researchers will now have access to more than 3.4 million additional articles from Elsevier, a highly regarded publisher in the fields of science and engineering with titles including “The Lancet” and “Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology and Medicine.”

Though OhioLINK member libraries have had access to nearly 2,400 Elsevier journals previously, this collection includes historic backfiles, allowing Ohio’s academic community to search for and cite past works and knowledge. The acquisition of these backfiles has been a top priority for OhioLINK over the last three years, culminating in the state Controlling Board’s November 22, 2010, approval of purchase.

“This purchase speaks to the hard work and dedication of the OhioLINK community,” says Eric Fingerhut, Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents. “When it became clear these materials would help accelerate science and engineering research throughout the state, the community came together to put the resources in the hands of the students and faculty who need them.”

The addition of these files was made possible by funds by funds from both the Ohio Board of Regents and contributions from all member institutions, including The Ohio State University Libraries.

If you locate an Elsevier journal title (e.g. Applied Mathematics and Computation) in the EJC and need an earlier issue than is listed there (pre-1995), there is a link on the right side of the page to “Publisher” website. That will take you to the “Science Direct” site, where you can enter the volume needed to get to that issue. Or you could go directly to the Science Direct site and search for the journal title there: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science.
